About Aritayaki

Timeless elegance born from 400 years of craftsmanship

Discover the legacy of Japan's first porcelain, cherished worldwide for its beauty and artistry.

A Legacy Spanning Four Centuries

Arita ware began in 1616 when Yi Sam-pyeong, a Korean potter who came to Japan, discovered porcelain stone in Izumiyama, Arita, Saga Prefecture. This marked the beginning of Japan’s first porcelain production. By the late 17th century, Arita ware was exported to Europe through the Dutch East India Company and became known as “IMARI.”

Artistry in Every Detail

Arita ware is renowned for its pure white porcelain and delicate hand-painted designs. Signature techniques include indigo blue underglaze (sometsuke), overglaze enamels in red and gold (akae), and elaborate kinrande (gold-decorated) styles. Distinctive styles such as Kakiemon and Nabeshima also evolved over time.

Sustainability Through Tradition

Committed to sustainability, Arita ware is produced in small quantities by skilled artisans using traditional methods. Upcycling initiatives using discarded materials further contribute to local resource circulation and cultural preservation.

Integrating Arita-yaki into Modern Living

While rooted in tradition, Arita ware also blends seamlessly with modern lifestyles. Its simple and refined designs complement North American interiors and dining tables, bringing subtle beauty to everyday moments.
